Former Olympian making MMA debut at HFL

ProMMAnow.com first broke the news back in February about former Olympian and BJJ black belt Rhadi Ferguson’s decision to make the move to professional mixed martial arts. Now that time has finally arrived. On Aug. 21, Ferguson, cousin of Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, will make his pro MMA debut at Hybrid Fight League in Hopkinsville, Ky.

ProMMAnow.com confirmed the news with both, Hybrid Fight League and Ferguson’s manager. An opponent for Ferguson has not yet been determined, but should be announced within the next few days.

Ferguson has a PhD in education, is a judo black belt and holds a BJJ black belt under Ricardo Liborio. He is also well known for his strength and conditioning programs and helps train professional athletes in several sports. He has worked with and helped train such MMA fighters as Jeff Monson, Brandon Vera and Bobby Lashley to name just a few.

Gameness Fight Series results for June 17 from Prommanow.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — “Gameness Fighting Championship VII” took place tonight, led by main event and Strikeforce veteran Dustin Ortiz, who wasted little time in improving his professional record to 4-0 (1-0 Strikeforce), winning by rear naked choke at just over a minute into the first round of his bout over Forrest Beard.

Ortiz overwhelmed Beard right out of the gate, quickly getting the fight to the ground, then took the back of Beard as he rolled, locking in a fight ending rear naked choke that forced the tap almost immediately.

Alexander upsets Pennington

Justin Pennington may have been the Strikeforce veteran coming into his bout with Cory Alexander, but someone forgot to tell Alexander to be impressed. In a very exciting and technical bout, the momentum seemed to swing to each fighter every few seconds as both fighters constantly scrambled for dominant positions.

Both guys had there share of sweeps and reversals when the fight was on the ground, but the key moment in the fight happened on the feet, as Alexander landed a brutal right hand that bloodied the face of Pennington. Once the fight hit the ground, Alexander took the back of Pennington and locked up a fight ending rear naked choke.

Scrivner wins by way of DQ

Spencer Scrivner landed some brutal, unchecked knees to the thigh of Steve Chico from the clinch in the first round, but it was a knee of another kind that would end the bout prematurely.

After a scramble in the second frame, Chico took the fight to the ground, and as Scrivner worked to get back to his feet, Chico landed a devastating knee to the face of Scrivner while he was still on his knees.

It was an obvious illegal blow, and after a referee stoppage to check on Scrivner, the fight was declared over, and Scrivner was awarded the win based on the DQ.

Gooch wins pro debut by decision

NMMA fighter Ashley Gooch made his pro debut tonight, and many thought that his bout would end by KO, win or lose. Instead, the fight turned into a ground battle with Gooch controlling the action for much of the bout.

The constant pressure applied by Gooch on the ground tested the cardio of Donker, as Donker crawled back to his corner between each of the rounds. Gooch nearly finished the fight in the third, gaining a dominant crucifix position, and dropping big shots to the face of Donker.

The finish never came, but Gooch was awarded a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 30-26), and moves to 1-0 as a professional.

JC Cuffee ends Foster’s night in just 7 seconds

James Foster decided right at the beginning of his fight with Team Lloyd Irvin fighter JC Cuffee, that he would take the fight to the ground. His attempt to shoot and take the fight to the floor got stuffed, and within a couple of seconds, Cuffee slapped on a tight guillotine that forced Foster to tap immediately.

In other action from the amateur card, Chris Camacho added a highlight reel KO, with a one-punch knockout of Angelo Gisante after surviving a tight guillotine attempt earlier in the fight, just 7 seconds into the second round.

Health Watch featuring Boom Superfoods from prommannow

We always hear about fighters cutting weight. Often times we will see a fighter who has had a hard time making the weight limit and they will look sluggish in the fight.

As professional athletes, not only do MMA fighters put their bodies through rigorous training, but in addition they have to really keep a close watch on their weight levels. It takes a level of commitment few adults will ever know or understand.

In this Health Watch spotlight, MMA fighter and ProMMAnow.com reporter Tami Carswell talks with Boom Superfoods Founder Jeff McIntosh. Tami has been using FOODFIGHT, a Boom Superfoods product that has given her and her friends some very favorable results in and out of the gym.

Specifically, Tami talks to Jeff about what makes FOODFIGHT different from so many other products out there on the market and what makes its ingredients like Maca, Chlorella, and Spirulina so special.

All fighters (and athletes) are looking for an edge over their competition. Maybe your opponent is working out just as hard as you are, but will they have the same energy level as you in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds?

Maybe FOODFIGHT is just what you need to give you that extra edge. Take a listen, do a little research, and decide for yourself. For more information on FOODFIGHT, check out the Boom Superfoods website at www.BoomSuperfoods.com.

Gameness Fight Series in Nashville Tn from Prommanow.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Some of the area’s top fighters will compete tonight at the Rivergate Silverado’s as part of the Gameness Fight Series. The doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the action starts at 8:00 p.m. Headlining the card will be Strikeforce veteran Dustin Ortiz, who fights out of Ed Clay’s Nashville MMA, taking on the mega-experienced Matt “Horn-Dog” Horning, representing Team Criis out of Ohio.

Ortiz is coming off a big win against Justin Pennington at “Strikeforce: Nashville” last month. For someone so young into their professional career, Ortiz had a great showing fighting for the first time on a major card. He dominated the bout and ended up sinking in a rear-naked choke submission with about 30 seconds left in the first round.

Tonight though, Ortiz is going to face an entirely different kind of fighter. Horning will be the most experienced fighter Ortiz has ever faced. With over 20 victories on his professional record, not a single one of those victories went to a decision. He is a type of fighter, win or lose, who will lay it all on the line.

Horning has lost his last few bouts, so he will likely be very hungry for the win. And at 33-years-old and fighting professionally since 2003, he is going to be an interesting test for local favorite Ortiz. For more information on the Gameness Fight Series which takes place on the third Thursday of each month, check out www.nashvillecagefights.com or their Facebook page.
